South Korean Police Investigate Former Mayor Over Cryptocurrency Disclosure Allegations
South Korean police are investigating former Incheon Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok over allegations that he and his wife intentionally omitted cryptocurrency assets from their mandatory election financial disclosure. The probe centers on claims that they transferred approximately 21,000 cryptocurrency tokens to an overseas exchange before submitting their disclosures during the June 3 local elections.
Election authorities had previously noted a discrepancy between Yoo's reported assets and actual holdings, with his reported assets being about 78 million won lower. Police have already questioned Yoo and his wife, as well as individuals connected to the case, and are reviewing evidence seized during searches of their home and city offices.
The investigation is part of a broader trend in South Korea, where authorities are closely scrutinizing digital asset-related matters. This includes ongoing investigations into alleged employment favoritism at cryptocurrency exchanges like Bithumb.
