South Korea's Crypto Exchange Plans Hit Roadblock Over Anti-Money Laundering Fears
South Korea's plans to expand cryptocurrency exchange partnerships with multiple banks may be delayed due to concerns over anti-money laundering (AML) regulations. A recent report from the Korea Institute of Finance (KIF) advises caution, warning that a complete rollout could weaken AML monitoring and create an uneven playing field for exchanges.
The current single-bank partnership model has been criticized for limiting competition and creating barriers for smaller exchanges. However, allowing multiple bank partnerships could create fragmented oversight, making it harder for regulators to track suspicious transactions across different financial institutions.
The KIF proposed a phased approach, where exchanges could partner with several banks but each user would be required to choose only one bank for trading. This hybrid model aims to balance investor choice with AML control while requiring significant coordination between exchanges, banks, and regulators.
