South Korea's Crypto Market Sees Resurgence as Bitcoin Rallies
South Korea's Upbit exchange saw its trading volume surge by 273% to $1.84 billion on August 21, according to CoinGecko data. This marked the exchange's strongest daily volume since mid-March 2026. XRP was one of the standout assets, with a 24-hour volume of roughly $418.9 million.
The sharp increase in trading activity suggests that South Korean crypto traders are responding quickly to renewed Bitcoin strength. When Bitcoin rallies and retail appetite improves, local participation tends to come in waves, causing trading volumes on exchanges like Upbit and Bithumb to rise quickly.
However, it's essential to note that the 273% volume jump does not necessarily indicate a permanent recovery of South Korea's crypto market. The exchange volume can be noisy, reflecting short-term momentum, arbitrage, leverage, or local trader enthusiasm rather than steady long-term demand.
