South Korea's Kimchi Premium Returns, Fueling Bitcoin Optimism
Bitcoin has regained its 'kimchi premium' in South Korea after a rally in token prices boosted risk appetite among retail investors. The price gap between Korean exchanges and global markets, known as the kimchi premium, is seen as a key indicator of retail investor sentiment across Asia.
The largest cryptocurrency is trading at around 1% premium on Upbit, South Korea's largest exchange, compared to Binance. This marks the longest sustained streak since early May, with prices showing no signs of slowing down.
Rachael Lucas, an analyst at BTC Markets, pointed out that Korean retail investors tend to buy aggressively in risk-on phases and capital controls mean buying shows up as a price gap rather than arbitrage flow.
The return of the premium comes as bitcoin enters September with prices around US$79,000. Historically, discount-to-premium crossings have preceded stronger bitcoin returns over the following weeks.
