Space Mining Fiasco: Starcloud's BTC Venture Raises Red Flags
Starcloud, a company that aims to build data centers in space, has received nearly half a billion dollars in funding and boasts an over $2 billion valuation. However, its latest endeavor is mining Bitcoin (BTC) in space, which raises questions about the feasibility of such a project.
The main challenge for BTC mining in space is obtaining cheap energy, as it requires specialized equipment that can withstand extreme temperatures and radiation. Launch costs, maintenance expenses, and limited access to replacement parts will add to the expense. Currently, it's cheaper to mine Bitcoin on Earth using renewable energy sources or alternative fuels.
Starcloud's data centers-in-space idea has already been criticized by experts, including the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and YouTuber Real Engineering. They argue that building gigawatts worth of processing power in space would require tens of thousands of launches and massive infrastructure investments, far beyond what SpaceX or other companies have achieved.
Additionally, Starcloud has already sent an Nvidia H100 GPU into space but was unable to run it at full capacity due to overheating issues. The company's CEO continues to promote the concept, despite facing numerous obstacles and skepticism from experts.
