Sphere 3D Faces $2.2M Tariff Claim Amid Bitcoin Mining Operations

Sphere 3D, a company involved in Bitcoin mining, is facing a potential $2.2 million tariff claim from US Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The agency claims that certain Bitcoin miners purchased by one of Sphere 3D's subsidiaries in 2022 are of Chinese origin.

The company disputes this assertion, stating that the import documents provided by the seller included certificates of origin and manufacture certifying that the miners were not made in China. Despite this, CBP has treated the equipment as Chinese-origin goods.

Sphere 3D plans to protest the tariff claim, which could impact its liquidity given that it currently holds approximately $2.8 million in cash and nearly $1.2 million worth of BTC. The company's June 30 balance sheet showed significant operating losses and negative cash flow, raising concerns about its ability to continue without additional funding.
