Spot Bitcoin ETF Closure Doesn't Signal Woes for Bitcoin
The first spot Bitcoin ETF to close down is Hashdex Bitcoin Futures ETF (NYSEMKT: DEFI), which will stop accepting creation orders on August 17. This news may seem alarming, but it's not a negative sign for Bitcoin itself. The closure of this fund highlights the competitive nature of the ETF industry.
According to Bloomberg Intelligence senior ETF analyst Eric Balchunas, the ETF industry is so competitive that he describes it as the 'ETF Terrordome.' This means that ETFs need to continuously attract assets to extend their lifespans. The Hashdex fund failed to do this, with only $14.7 million in assets under management.
Despite the closure of one spot Bitcoin ETF, there are still eight others with at least $1 billion in assets under management. This indicates that market participants love accessing digital currencies through ETFs and suggests that the demise of Hashdex is not a clear sell signal for Bitcoin.
