Spot Bitcoin ETF Closure Not a Cause for Alarm
The cryptocurrency market is not likely to be affected by the closure of the first spot Bitcoin ETF, Hashdex Bitcoin Futures ETF (DEFI). The fund will stop accepting creation orders on August 17 and has had a modest $14.7 million in assets under management.
This closure is more a reflection of the competitive nature of the exchange-traded fund (ETF) industry than any issue with Bitcoin itself. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, ETFs can close at a rate of over one for every five new launches, with 730 new ETFs debuting in the U.S. through the first six months of 2026 and 156 closing.
Investors who use spot Bitcoin ETFs are unlikely to abandon the asset class due to this closure, as eight such funds have at least $1 billion in assets under management, with several others having more than $300 million.
