Spot Demand Takes the Reins as Bitcoin's Price Surge Defies Leverage
Bitcoin's recent price surge has taken on a unique characteristic - genuine spot market demand is driving the rally, rather than speculative leverage. Crypto analyst Murphy pointed out that while short liquidations were triggered by the price jump, open interest (OI) in futures actually declined.
This suggests that the upward movement was fueled by the unwinding of bearish positions and an influx of spot buyers, not new leveraged bets. The spot relative volume (SRV) on exchanges reached 2.94 on August 19-20, nearly three times the 30-day average, indicating a substantial increase in spot trading activity.
The decline in open interest during a price surge is a key differentiator, typically suggesting that new positions are being opened fueled by leverage. In contrast, this time the market saw short sellers being forced to cover their positions, creating a more sustainable price movement.
Murphy noted that this spot-driven dynamic has not appeared since the market entered a bearish phase, offering a potentially positive signal. However, he cautioned that it does not alone confirm a trend reversal.
