Springfield Police Warn of Multi-Million Dollar Bitcoin Scam
The Springfield Police Department in Massachusetts is warning residents about a Bitcoin scam that has cost nearly $1 million in losses. The scammers target victims by posing as law enforcement members, claiming a loved one is in jail and requires bail money or that there's an active warrant for the victim's arrest.
The perpetrators often use the names of actual law enforcement professionals to appear legitimate during these interactions. They instruct people to deposit money into a cryptocurrency or Bitcoin machine, which once processed, is permanently lost.
Ryan Walsh, public information officer for the Springfield Police Department, emphasized that legitimate law enforcement and judicial agencies do not conduct financial business in this manner.
'The police, or the sheriffs, or the courts will never call you and ask you for money,' Walsh said. 'Anything like that will be done at the Police Department or at the courthouse, whatever it may be, if there is any type of money owed.'
