SSA COLA Estimate Sees Average Retiree Benefit Topping $2,160 in 2027

Retirees may see their average monthly Social Security benefit rise above $2,160 in 2027 if current inflation projections hold. The Senior Citizens League estimates a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment for next year, down from its earlier forecast of 3.8%. This would be the largest COLA since 2023, when it was 3.2%. However, the actual figure may differ due to ongoing inflation trends.

The average retired worker received $2,085.98 per month in July 2026, and applying a 3.6% increase would raise that amount by roughly $75 to about $2,161 per month. The adjustment is not uniform across all beneficiaries, as COLAs are percentage-based. For example, someone receiving $1,500 per month would gain about $54 with a 3.6% adjustment.

Spouses of retired workers could also see their average benefit rise above $1,000 for the first time, from $986.53 to roughly $1,022. However, it's essential to note that a larger check does not automatically translate into an equivalent improvement in purchasing power due to rising expenses like Medicare premiums and housing costs.
