Stablecoin Adoption Surges in Argentina Amid Economic Turmoil
Argentina's peso has largely been displaced by stablecoins in cryptocurrency trading, according to a recent report from A16z Crypto. In fact, 94% of Argentine peso cryptocurrency trading volume now goes towards stablecoins, the highest share among any major currency tracked by analytics firm Artemis.
This trend is not surprising given Argentina's tumultuous economic past. Monthly inflation peaked at 25.5% in the country, but has since plummeted to 2.1%. The narrowing gap between digital dollar premiums and official rates also suggests that smart policy can coexist with stablecoin adoption.
One indicator of this shift is the growth of USDC payments to Argentine contractors on payroll platform Deel. While year-over-year growth peaked at 289% in April 2024, it has since slowed down significantly. However, the absolute volume of stablecoin payments didn't collapse, instead, it grew more slowly.
This suggests that once Argentines adopted digital dollars, they didn't go back to traditional currency. Contractors are choosing stablecoins as their preferred form of compensation, a decision that reflects deep distrust of the local currency even as macroeconomic conditions improve.
