Stablecoin Boom Aims to Bolster Dollar Status

The Genius Act, signed into law by President Donald Trump last July, establishes a nationwide framework for stablecoins. Stablecoin issuers are required to back their tokens with dollar-denominated assets such as Treasury bills.

Crypto boosters like Donald Trump Jr. believe that legalizing dollar-denominated stablecoins will help reinforce the US dollar's status as the world's dominant currency. They argue that this will drive down yields on government-issued debt and make borrowing cheaper for Americans.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent shares a similar view, suggesting that the proliferation of stablecoins will lead to more demand for Treasury bills. This increased demand would in turn drive down yields and reduce borrowing costs.
