Stablecoin Dominance Persists in Argentina Amid Easing Inflation
Argentina's cryptocurrency market is dominated by stablecoins, which account for 94% of peso-denominated trading volume. According to an analysis by a16z Crypto, this is the highest share among major currencies tracked by Artemis.
The use of stablecoins in Argentina is largely driven by the country's history of currency devaluations and high inflation rates. Many Argentines have turned to digital dollar-linked tokens such as USDT and USDC as a way to obtain dollar exposure without holding banknotes or entering the official foreign-exchange market.
The analysis also found that downloads of cryptocurrency applications in Argentina increased 93% year over year during 2024, with one in five Argentines using cryptocurrency. However, it's worth noting that trading flows show strong demand for dollar conversion, while wallet balances may include more Bitcoin and other assets accumulated over time.
