Stablecoin Growth Stalls, US Treasury's $3 Trillion Dream Unfulfilled
The US Treasury's hopes for stablecoins to become trillion-dollar buyers of US Treasuries have been dealt a setback. Industry growth has stalled, and demand for stablecoins has softened due to declining crypto trading sentiment.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had predicted that stablecoin firms could grow into trillion-dollar buyers, but this projection now appears unlikely. The stagnation in stablecoin growth undermines the current administration's view that embracing the crypto sector can expand the market for Treasury demand and benefit US finances.
Tether's USDT, the largest stablecoin issuer, saw a nearly $3 billion contraction in the first half of the year, dropping to around $184 billion. Circle's USDC also declined, reaching approximately $72 billion according to company data.
