Stablecoin Market Shrinks but Transaction Volume Hits Record Pace

The stablecoin market has seen a significant shift in recent months, with issuers shedding $7.7 billion in June alone, the largest monthly decline since the Terra collapse in May 2022. This drop brings the total capitalization of the market down to $308.5 billion from its peak of $322.41 billion in May.

However, despite this decline, adjusted stablecoin transaction volume reached a record $1.83 trillion in June, a 60% increase from May and more than double the level recorded a year earlier. This divergence suggests that fewer dollars are sitting idle, with the remaining supply moving faster through payments, trading, and settlement systems.

Tether's USDT supply declined from $189.54 billion on May 1 to around $184 billion as of July 29, while Circle's USDC fell from $77.27 billion to $72.41 billion over the same period. Some capital appears to have moved into tokenized Treasury products, which offer returns unavailable on payment stablecoins.
