Stablecoin Skepticism: BIS Chief Warns Against Relying on Digital Assets for Wide-Scale Payments
The head of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), Pablo Hernandez de Cos, has expressed skepticism about stablecoins serving as a reliable means of payment on a wide scale.
Hernandez de Cos made his comments at the Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium in Wyoming, where he discussed the differences between tokenized deposits and stablecoins. He stated that while both types of assets can coexist, tokenized deposits are more suitable for everyday transactions and wholesale payments due to their stability and security.
Hernandez de Cos warned that stablecoins may not be able to ensure the 'singularity' of currency, citing the need for interoperability between different blockchains and the potential for price discrepancies in secondary markets. He also noted that the proliferation of dollar-linked stablecoins could undermine monetary sovereignty and lead to a decline in the transmission of financial policies within countries.
