Stablecoin Spend via Crypto Cards Skyrockets to $759 Million
Crypto payment cards have become increasingly popular, with monthly spend reaching $759 million in July. This represents a significant increase from just over $306 million a year ago and under $1 million when tracking began in October 2023.
The number of purchases made using these cards is also growing rapidly, with nearly 9 million transactions in July, up from around 5.2 million a year ago. The average amount spent per transaction is approximately $86.
Stablecoins have taken the lead in crypto card spending, with USDC handling about 58% of card spend and USDT accounting for around 26%. This shift away from Euro-backed stablecoins, which dominated early adoption, reflects growing demand for dollar-denominated assets. The trend towards greater use of digital dollars is part of a broader acceleration of the global financial system.
Crypto payment cards offer users access to traditional card networks without requiring a bank account, making them a convenient option for those holding stablecoins or using self-custody wallets. However, it's essential to note that this market remains relatively small compared to traditional card networks, which process trillions of dollars per month.
