Stablecoin Toll Payments Flow Through Strait of Hormuz at $20 Million Daily
The Strait of Hormuz has become a key testbed for crypto-powered international commerce, as Iran's toll regime demands payment in digital currencies. The country imposed transit tolls on vessels passing through the waterway and requires fees to be paid in yuan or stablecoins.
The rate sits at around $1 per barrel, with estimates suggesting daily inflows from these toll transactions could reach as much as $20 million. Annualized, that's potentially $7.3 billion flowing through crypto rails.
Iran chose stablecoins over Bitcoin due to their fast and pseudonymous nature, which makes them difficult for Western regulators to intercept in real time. The country has been squeezed out of the traditional financial system through sanctions, making stablecoins a viable workaround.
