Stablecoin Users Fragment into Three Distinct Camps

The stablecoin market has been characterized as having reached all-time highs in terms of total supply. However, beneath this surface-level data lies a more complex story of user behavior, which can be divided into three distinct camps: yield seekers, payments-first users, and pure traders.

Yield seekers have been the primary drivers of stablecoin supply expansion since 2024's rate-cut cycle began. They use stablecoins as a high-yielding asset that happens to be denominated in dollars, with their behavior almost entirely dictated by the spread between on-chain yields and traditional money market rates.

One notable example is Ethena's USDe, which generated annualized yields exceeding 10% during high-funding-rate regimes in early 2026. Total USDe supply grew from approximately $3.5 billion at the start of 2026 to above $6 billion by late Q2, making it the third-largest stablecoin by supply on Ethereum.

Payments users, on the other hand, use stablecoins for their original purpose: as a faster and cheaper substitute for wire transfers, cross-border remittances, and B2B settlements. This group has been consistently underweighted in aggregate data because their transactions are smaller, more frequent, and concentrated on chains like Tron, Stellar, and Solana.

Traders who park stablecoins between positions make up the third cohort. These crypto-native traders hold stablecoins not as a long-term savings vehicle or for payments, but as a neutral reserve between speculative positions.
