Stablecoins: Africa's Digital Lifeline
The digital dollar that could transform how Africa moves money is known as stablecoins. These cryptocurrencies are designed to maintain a stable value and are typically pegged one-to-one with a major currency like the US dollar. The two most widely used stablecoins globally are USDT (Tether) and USDC (USD Circle).
Africa leads the world in stablecoin adoption relative to GDP, due to its volatile currencies, costly banking systems, and complex cross-border transactions.
Stablecoins can facilitate borderless transfers at a fraction of the traditional fee. For example, a Ghanaian exporter sending payment to a supplier in Shenzhen, China can do so in minutes with stablecoins, rather than waiting five working days and queuing at a bank.
The GENIUS Act, signed by President Trump in July 2025, mandates that every dollar of payment stablecoin issued in the United States must be backed by a dollar of qualifying liquid assets. This law enhances the credibility of stablecoins globally.
