Stablecoins Disrupt Traditional Remittance Model with Instant, Cost-Effective Transfers
The traditional remittance model has remained largely unchanged over the past 50 years. According to the Solana Foundation report, sending $200 abroad costs an average of 6.49% and takes three to five business days to settle. However, a new generation of stablecoin-based money transfer products is disrupting this old model.
Stablecoins on Solana enable instant, cost-effective remittances by allowing value to be moved directly on-chain and then handed off to local partners at the final step of conversion into cash or local currency. This reduces the multi-day settlement window to near real-time and eliminates much of the capital that traditionally sat idle just to guarantee timing.
Western Union, Zepz, and Tala have already launched stablecoin-linked products, including digital wallets and a $50 million tokenized lending facility. MoneyGram has also launched a virtual Visa-linked stablecoin card in Colombia, built with Rain supplying card infrastructure and the Stellar network handling underlying blockchain transactions.
The report highlights that 1.3 billion unbanked adults remain largely excluded from remittance services, despite nearly half of them owning a smartphone capable of running a digital wallet. Stablecoins on Solana can bridge this financial inclusion gap by allowing recipients to hold and spend dollar-linked value without ever opening a traditional account.
