Stablecoins Found Most Useful in Cross-Border Payments

Share

The UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has identified cross-border payments as the strongest practical application for stablecoins, based on feedback from banks, payment companies, and crypto firms during its Stablecoin Sprint.

Participants in the sprint said that stablecoins offer the clearest value in cross-border payments, especially in markets where access to U.S. dollars is limited. They also noted that existing payment systems already provide fast and low-cost transactions, making it unlikely for UK consumers to switch to stablecoins for everyday retail payments.

However, merchants could benefit from stablecoin payments, as they may experience lower transaction costs and faster settlement. The FCA's findings will inform its stablecoin issuer rules and shape future policy for stablecoin payments.
