Stablecoins Hit Record 300M Users as Dollar Banking Goes Global
The stablecoin market has seen significant growth in recent times, with over 300 million unique users engaging with dollar-pegged tokens. According to analytics firm Artemis, this figure represents an unprecedented number of users, and one that is expected to continue growing.
This growth is not mirrored in the retail crypto trading market, which has cooled down in the past year. However, the firms moving stablecoins are increasingly payment companies and consumer apps rather than traditional crypto exchanges.
Apps like Rizon are driving this adoption by providing users with a simple way to access dollar banking services. With 122 countries covered in just 65 weeks, Rizon has achieved impressive growth, with 280,000 users and $120 million in annual payment volume. However, not everyone thinks these apps are as new as they look, with some arguing that they are simply a veneer on the existing system.
The regulation of stablecoins has played a significant role in their adoption. The Genius Act signed by Trump created clear rules for managing stablecoins, while Europe's MiCA offers straightforward regulation for software built on top. This regulatory framework has attracted major players like Stripe, Mastercard, and Visa to the space.
The issuers of stablecoins are confident that this trend will continue, with some predicting that cards will be the primary retail payment use case for stablecoins by the end of the year. However, as one expert noted, whether these apps become licensed banks or remain thin front ends remains an open question.
