Stablecoins Outperform Traditional Payments in New Bank of Italy Study

Share

The Bank of Italy conducted a study on stablecoin remittances and found that they could reduce global payment costs. Researchers analyzed approximately 200 stablecoin-based remittance transactions across 10 different payment routes, and in most cases, these digital asset transfers outperformed traditional payment costs. The main challenge was not the blockchain transaction fees but rather the process of converting digital assets back into traditional currencies.

The study suggests that improving direct usability could significantly increase the advantages of stablecoins. This means allowing users to spend digital assets directly without needing to convert them into fiat currencies first. Such a system could simplify cross-border payments and potentially offer meaningful improvements for global payment systems.

International remittances play a critical role in the global economy, with millions of workers sending money to family members every year. Traditional remittance services often charge fees that can reduce the amount received by families. Stablecoins offer a potential alternative by reducing the number of intermediaries involved in moving money and making transactions faster and cheaper.
