Stablecoins Overtake Naira as Nigeria's Dollar of Choice
Nigeria's naira has found a worthy rival in the form of stablecoins, which have been gaining popularity rapidly. According to the IMF's 2026 Article IV consultation on Nigeria, between July 2023 and June 2024, Nigeria received approximately $59 billion in crypto-asset value.
This influx of stablecoins has led to a significant increase in their use in Nigeria. Stablecoins are digital tokens designed to hold a stable value against a reference asset, most commonly the U.S. dollar. In Nigeria, two dollar-denominated tokens dominate the market: Tether (USDT) and USD Coin (USDC).
The use of stablecoins has expanded beyond traditional channels such as commercial banks, bureaux de change, and international money-transfer operators. Peer-to-peer trading has become a popular alternative, allowing individuals to transact directly with each other through crypto platforms.
