Stablecoins Revolutionize Global Remittances with Speed and Savings
The traditional money-transfer infrastructure has been in place for decades, but it's showing its age. Sending $200 can cost as much as 6.49% due to high fees and slow settlement times of three to five business days.
Stablecoins on the Solana blockchain are changing this by reducing costs, speeding up settlements, and expanding access to financial services for millions around the world. According to a report from the Solana Foundation, stablecoin transfers can settle almost immediately, cost less than legacy corridors, and reach people without traditional banking relationships.
The industry's problems are well-known: operators must park large sums in pre-funded accounts to ensure recipients get their cash on time, tying up hundreds of billions of dollars that could be used more productively. The report highlights three key findings:
First, remittances often remain isolated transactions and don't come bundled with savings tools, credit histories, investment options, or portable financial identities.
Second, the market continues to overlook 1.3 billion adults without bank accounts, despite nearly half of them owning smartphones.
Third, stablecoin transfers can cut costs significantly and reach people who lack traditional banking relationships.
