Stablecoins Take Flight in Hong Kong, But Can They Clear Asia's Payment Hurdles?
Hong Kong has introduced a comprehensive licensing regime for fiat-referenced stablecoin issuers, treating them as part of the financial system. This regulatory framework covers reserve backing, redemption rights, capital requirements, and disclosure obligations in more detail than most jurisdictions.
The introduction of this license settles a longstanding regulatory question, but it doesn't address the harder issue: whether stablecoins can move through Asia's existing payment systems rather than around them.
Regulators no longer treat stablecoins as a cryptocurrency curiosity outside the financial system. Instead, they recognize their potential to replace traditional assets in cross-border transactions.
