Stacks Achieves Unconditional Bitcoin Finality with Nakamoto Upgrade
Stacks has made a significant breakthrough in its quest for security and finality. The Nakamoto upgrade, which activated on October 26, 2024, around Bitcoin block 867,867, has restructured how Stacks organizes block production, tying each block directly to a Bitcoin block.
This means that every transaction on the Stacks network now settles with the same finality as a Bitcoin block. In other words, reversing a confirmed Stacks transaction requires reorging Bitcoin itself, making it virtually impossible.
The upgrade has also enabled the launch of sBTC, a Bitcoin-backed asset that lives on Stacks and inherits the same finality guarantee. This allows Bitcoin holders to move value into Stacks-based applications without wrapping through a centralized custodian or bridging mechanism.
