Stacks Launches Genesis Bond Institutional Bitcoin Staking Period
Stacks has launched its first institutional Bitcoin staking period, known as the Genesis Bond. The initiative involves four institutions - 21Shares, HashKey Cloud, UTXO Management, and Sypher Capital - collectively bonding 250 BTC at launch.
The participation of these institutions marks a significant step towards mainstream adoption of decentralized finance (DeFi) on Bitcoin's base layer. Stacks' Proof of Transfer mechanism enables the distribution of rewards to participants without requiring them to lend their BTC to a centralized borrower.
While self-custodial participants retain control over their BTC, Sypher Capital used StackingDAO to delegate operational work and avoid smart-contract, protocol, and liquidity risks associated with direct participation. The Genesis Bond does not expose participants to slashing, but missing reward conditions may result in lost earnings for that cycle.
Registration has opened for a second bonding period starting in early October, with future periods expected to open monthly through the remainder of 2026. The launch follows the Stacks PoX-5 hard fork activated July 30, which created the protocol foundation for this staking design.
