Stacks Unveils 2026 Roadmap for Self-Custodial Bitcoin Finance
Stacks has unveiled its 2026 roadmap for building a self-custodial financial system on Bitcoin, aiming to enable holders to earn yield, borrow, and transact without giving up custody or trust assumptions.
The project's central thesis is that Bitcoin holders should be able to put their capital to work without ceding custody or relying on external entities. According to Muneeb Ali, Founder of Stacks, the goal is to 'drive Bitcoin growth by building Bitcoin-native finance where both individuals and institutions come to grow and manage their Bitcoin.'
The roadmap outlines three concurrent development phases: Anchor Capital, Scale Infrastructure, and Bitcoin-Native Finance. The first phase focuses on establishing an economic foundation through self-custodial yield, sustainable yield mechanisms, and STX as staking capacity.
Phase two prioritizes core performance upgrades to prepare the network for real DeFi volume and AI agent activity at scale, including a 100x throughput increase via Clarity WASM. The third phase aims to expand the financial economy native to Bitcoin, with lending, trading, perpetuals, and programmable capital.
Stacks is also working on expanding investment in sBTC and core security, as well as improving developer tools, ecosystem integration, and user experience through partnerships like Leather Wallet.
