Standard Chartered Becomes First Global Bank to Trade Bitcoin Directly in Dubai
Standard Chartered has taken a major step in institutionalizing crypto trading by enabling direct Bitcoin and Ether trading on its Dubai banking rails. The move marks a significant milestone for the global systemically important bank, which has become the first to offer institutional digital asset spot trading in the UAE.
The new service allows eligible clients to trade BTC/USD and ETH/USD through the bank's existing electronic trading channels, with settlement going through a custodian of the client's choice. This includes Standard Chartered's own digital asset custody service, which was launched in the UAE in September 2024.
This is not a retail crypto app with a bank logo on it; rather, it is a global systemically important bank putting deliverable Bitcoin and Ether spot trading inside regulated institutional infrastructure. For clients who already deal with Standard Chartered, this means they can continue to manage their cash flows through the bank without having to move their relationship to a crypto-native venue.
Standard Chartered first introduced institutional Bitcoin and Ether spot trading in its UK branch on July 15, 2025, when it said it had become the first G-SIB to offer deliverable spot cryptoasset trading to institutional clients. Dubai came next, with the DIFC branch being regulated by the Dubai Financial Services Authority.
The order is telling: instead of following in the footsteps of other major financial hubs like New York or Singapore, Standard Chartered chose to make its move in Dubai. This may be a sign that the UAE is becoming a serious player in digital asset finance, with the region trying to establish itself as more than just a place where crypto firms rent offices and issue announcements.
