Standard Chartered Brings Institutional Crypto Trading to UAE
Standard Chartered has become the first globally systemically important bank to offer institutional spot Bitcoin and Ethereum trading in the United Arab Emirates. This development marks a significant shift in the traditional banking infrastructure, as eligible institutional clients can now buy and sell BTC and ETH with physical delivery of the assets.
The bank's new service allows investors to utilize the same interfaces they already use for foreign exchange (FX) trading, bringing Bitcoin and Ethereum closer to traditional financial infrastructure. This integration is a departure from traditional models where exposure was limited to derivatives or other financial instruments.
Standard Chartered has also emphasized that it does not require clients to use its proprietary storage infrastructure. Once a trade is executed, investors can transfer their assets to a custodian of their choice, including Standard Chartered's own digital asset solution. This model ensures that trade execution and asset custody remain separate functions.
The bank's expansion into the UAE represents the next phase of its digital asset strategy, which already encompasses trading, custody, and tokenization. The move signals a shift in competition among traditional banks, moving from offering limited crypto exposure toward building full-scale institutional infrastructure.
