Standard Chartered Distributes HKDAP Stablecoin to Customers
Standard Chartered has become the first bank to distribute Hong Kong's HKDAP stablecoin, marking a significant development in the territory's financial sector. The bank has partnered with the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) to offer the HKDAP stablecoin to its customers, allowing them to hold and use the digital currency as an alternative to traditional fiat currencies.
According to the HKMA, the HKDAP stablecoin is backed by a 1:1 reserve of Hong Kong dollars and is designed to provide a stable store of value. The move aims to increase financial inclusion and promote innovation in the territory's financial sector.
The partnership between Standard Chartered and the HKMA follows a series of regulatory efforts to promote the development of the digital currency market in Hong Kong. In 2020, the HKMA issued guidelines for the use of stablecoins in the territory, paving the way for banks to offer them to their customers.
