Stanford Professor: No Cause for Panic Over Quantum Threat to Bitcoin
Stanford University professor Dan Boneh has dismissed concerns that quantum computers will compromise Bitcoin's security. Speaking in an interview, Boneh stated that those who believe quantum computing will break blockchain security are mistaken.
Boneh, a leading figure in cryptography, acknowledged that there are technical details to resolve but said the broader path forward is already clear. He emphasized that the issue can be addressed by transitioning to post-quantum addresses.
Post-quantum cryptography refers to cryptographic algorithms that are believed to be secure against an attack by a quantum computer. Standards are already being developed by organizations like NIST, which in 2024 finalized several post-quantum algorithms. For Bitcoin, this would likely involve a soft fork or other upgrade to change the address scheme and transaction signing process.
Boneh's comments may help calm fears among investors and users who worry that a future quantum breakthrough could render Bitcoin worthless. However, he also cautioned that there is no immediate cause for panic, as large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computers are still years away.
