StarkWare Executes First Quantum-Safe Bitcoin Transaction on Mainnet
StarkWare, an Israel-based company specializing in cryptography and blockchain infrastructure, has successfully executed the first quantum-safe transaction on the Bitcoin mainnet. This breakthrough was made possible by StarkWare's Quantum-Safe Bitcoin (QSB) method, which adds a second quantum-resistant lock to existing transactions.
The QSB method uses signature grinding, a technique that creates a valid Bitcoin signature without a private key. This process is performed off-chain before the transaction is broadcast on the mainnet. The sender must spend computational effort searching for a spending transaction whose hash happens to be a validly formatted signature.
While this development demonstrates that it's possible to protect specific holdings against quantum threats using Bitcoin as it exists today, experts caution that it doesn't make existing BTC holdings automatically quantum-safe. QSB transactions also require direct submission to a miner and come with a significant computational cost of $150-$200 and several hours.
David de Paula Santos Silva, founder and CEO of CyberX, emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating, 'A Bitcoin holder can now move coins into a quantum-resistant construction using Bitcoin as it exists today, without changing its consensus rules.'
