StarkWare Successfully Tests Quantum-Resistant Bitcoin Transaction
A breakthrough in Bitcoin's security has been achieved by StarkWare researcher Avihu Levy. He successfully completed the first quantum-resistant transaction on the mainnet, as confirmed in block 964,199.
The test used a method called Quantum Safe Bitcoin (QSB), which protects against a future quantum computer breaking the cryptography used in normal BTC transactions. Instead of relying on elliptic curve cryptography, QSB uses hash-based security through one-time Lamport signatures and hash functions.
However, this breakthrough comes with a significant drawback: the process can cost around $150 to $200 per transaction, making it impractical for everyday users. The test also highlights the limitations of the current implementation, requiring high computing power and hours-long proof generation using multiple graphics cards.
