Stocks Surge Despite Slightly Higher Inflation Data
Stocks made a surprise push upward on Friday, defying concerns about inflation as major indices like the Dow and S&P 500 rose around 1%.
The August Consumer Price Index (CPI) data showed a 0.4% monthly increase and 3.4% annual rise in consumer prices, which was slightly higher than expected.
Core inflation, excluding volatile food and energy components, climbed 0.3%, exceeding the anticipated 0.2% forecast.
This stronger-than-expected core inflation figure prompted market participants to increase their expectations for a Federal Reserve rate hike, with traders assigning an 87% probability to a 25 basis point rate increase at next week's FOMC meeting.
Treasury yields moved higher after an initial decline following the CPI release, and crude oil prices retreated from recent highs, dropping to $100 per barrel.
