Stonkfly's Fruit-Fly Trader Falls Short of Trading Prowess
The Stonkfly project claims to have created a crypto trader using a simulated fruit-fly nervous system. However, its own evidence suggests that this claim may be overstated.
Stonkfly's system uses a retained graph of 166,700 neurons and 25,582,938 directed connections from the MaleCNS reconstruction. It receives public BTC-USDC prices as a 320-by-180-pixel candlestick chart through mapped visual cells.
A fixed decoder then compares firing rates in left- and right-turning cells to produce a buy or sell proposal. The project's technical explanation emphasizes that this is an engineered interface, not the discovery of biological 'buy neurons.'
The system has passed 42 software tests, but its validation record shows only one real exchange order with actual public Coinbase data. Five later buy proposals were blocked by a cooldown, and some relevant connections had changed before the external loss signal arrived.
Stonkfly's connection to Coinbase is narrow, and it is an independent project, not a trading product or endorsement of the method. Its scale makes the immediate financial consequence negligible, with maximum submitted notional at $240 per day.
