Storm Targets Google and OpenAI Over DOJ Crypto Conviction
Roman Storm, founder of Tornado Cash, has fired back at Google and OpenAI for allegedly enabling North Korea's nuclear program through their products. In a recent social media post, Storm pointed out the flawed logic behind his own conviction by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) in August 2025.
Storm was convicted of conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money transmitting business and argued that Google and OpenAI should be liable for the actions of North Korean operatives who use their products to fund the country's nuclear program. He stated, 'That's exactly the theory behind USA v. Roman Storm: build a neutral tool, bad actors abuse it, and the developer gets prosecuted instead of the criminals.'
Storm believes that if Google and OpenAI are not held accountable for their products being used by North Korean operatives, then he should not be either. He suggested that the DOJ should subpoena every employee of these companies and investigate whether they knew about the use of their tools by the DPRK.
