Strategy Buys Back $370M Worth of Bitcoin After Selling Off Stake

Strategy, a publicly traded firm listed on NASDAQ under MSTR, purchased $370 million worth of Bitcoin at an average price of $80,318 on August 31. This transaction followed four consecutive sales totaling over $430 million.

The purchase price was higher than Strategy's recent sales prices, which ranged from $59,000 to $64,000 per Bitcoin. As a result, the company sacrificed more than $80 million in shareholder value due to both the increased repurchase price and foregone opportunity costs.

Strategy's management team, led by Michael Saylor, has long advocated for holding onto Bitcoin, but this summer, they sold off some of their holdings. The reason for the sales was likely capital management, as Strategy posted a $12.5 billion loss in the first quarter and needed to fund a preferred dividend payment.

Saylor downplayed the significance of the sales, stating that they were intended to 'inoculate the market' and show that the company is financially stable.
