Strategy Halts Bitcoin Purchases Amid Falling Prices and Unrealized Losses
Strategy, the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin, has put its purchasing plans on hold for five weeks straight. According to Bloomberg, this pause in buying comes as Bitcoin prices have fallen, with Strategy recording $8.32 billion in unrealized losses on its Bitcoin investment in the second quarter alone.
The reason for this shift in focus is to preserve liquidity, a move that's been prompted by the 14% decline in Bitcoin value during the second quarter and a year-over-year drop of over 45%. In response, Strategy has maintained an option to sell Bitcoin if necessary, with Executive Chairman Michael Saylor set to address the company's stance on future purchases when it reports Q2 results.
Clear Street director of equity research Brian Dobson noted that for companies like Strategy, 'the most important thing is to show the market that it has sufficient liquidity and can withstand a crypto bear market.'
