Strategy Maps Path From Balance-Sheet Asset to Digital Capital Market Foundation
Strategy, a business intelligence firm known for its significant corporate Bitcoin holdings, has released an updated institutional guide that redefines the cryptocurrency's role in finance. The 21-page Bitcoin Investor Guide, revised on September 7, presents a vision of Bitcoin as the foundational layer of an emerging digital capital market.
The company has shifted from aggressively accumulating Bitcoin to prioritizing preferred stock buybacks and expanding its digital-credit securities repurchase program. This change was prompted by banks' reluctance to recognize Bitcoin as collateral due to Strategy's public stance that it would never sell. Chief Executive Officer Phong Le acknowledged this, stating that the company showed lenders its willingness to part with the asset if necessary.
The guide outlines a six-layer architecture built on Bitcoin: Digital Capital, Digital Equity, Digital Credit, Digital Debt, Digital Derivatives, and Digital Money. Each layer would contain financial instruments with varying risk and return profiles, anchored by Bitcoin's stability as the core asset.
Strategy's own balance sheet mirrors this architecture, holding approximately 845,050 BTC at a total cost of $63.73 billion and an average purchase price of $75,412 per coin. However, in recent weeks, Strategy has redirected funds toward repurchasing preferred stock and increasing its authorization for digital-credit securities buybacks to $2 billion.
The guide notes that while Bitcoin's 10-year annualized return is 62.8%, it produced a negative return of 28.3% over the past year. Strategy acknowledges its own conflicts of interest, having a direct economic stake in broader Bitcoin adoption due to its significant holdings and issued securities tied to the cryptocurrency.
