Strategy Sells Billions in Bitcoin as Market Conditions Worsen
Strategy, a publicly traded technology company and one of the largest holders of Bitcoin, has been selling its cryptocurrency stash. In contrast to its earlier stance of never selling Bitcoin, the company now considers it an option under certain market conditions.
In May, CEO Phong Le said Strategy could sell Bitcoin when doing so would benefit shareholders. 'At the point where selling Bitcoin versus selling equity to pay a dividend is better for our bitcoin-per-share, we will do it,' he told CNBC.
The shift away from its strict buy-and-hold approach began in 2026 due to worsening market conditions. In recent months, Strategy has sold a total of 6,948 BTC for around $432.5 million, using the proceeds to fund payments on its preferred stock and replenish its dollar reserve.
The company's Digital Credit Capital Framework allows it to sell up to $1.25 billion in Bitcoin to fund dividends, interest payments, and share buybacks. Despite these sales, Strategy still holds over 840,000 BTC, worth around $53.6 billion, according to its latest SEC filing on Monday.
