Strategy Stockpiles $6.69B Cash as Bitcoin Buying Takes Backseat
Michael Saylor's company Strategy has put its Bitcoin buying on hold for now. The company purchased zero Bitcoins last week, choosing instead to stockpile billions in cash and buy back preferred stock. As of August 23, Strategy had a combined USD Reserve and USD Cash balance of $6.69 billion.
This move is significant because it shows that Strategy is loading up its balance sheet with cash, which can be used for various purposes such as buying Bitcoins or repurchasing securities. The company has spent years accumulating an enormous Bitcoin pile of 840,447 BTC, which amounts to roughly 4% of the total available supply.
The USD Cash account, which held $1.59 billion as of August 23, is separate from the existing USD Reserve and can be used for various purposes such as buying Bitcoins or repurchasing securities. Strategy's management says that this flexibility allows them to strike faster when sharp dislocations hit Bitcoin or their own securities.
It's unclear what Strategy will do with its $1.59 billion cash pile, but it could potentially use it to buy back MSTR shares or support preferred securities. The company has authorization for potential MSTR repurchases under programs unveiled in June and also has a significant amount of cash available for preferred-stock buybacks.
