Strategy Suffers $8.2 Billion Loss as Bitcoin Price Decline Hits Fair-Value Accounting

Strategy, the Bitcoin treasury company led by Michael Saylor, reported a significant loss in Q2 2026 due to an accounting loss on its Bitcoin holdings. The company booked a net loss of $8.22 billion, reversing a profit of over $10 billion from a year ago.

The primary reason for this decrease was not an $8.2 billion cash outflow but rather an accounting loss on Bitcoin. This test the market's understanding of 'fair-value' accounting and the willingness to fund Strategy's capital structure, as envisioned by Michael Saylor.

Strategy held 846,000 BTC as of June 30 and 843,775 BTC as of July 26 after selling about 3,588 BTC in early July. The company sold Bitcoin for the first time in its history, signaling that it can serve as a liquid asset to fund operations.
