Strategy's $25M STRC Buyback Sparks Concern Over Corporate Capital Allocation

Strategy's $25 million buyback of STRC preferred shares has raised eyebrows among market analysts. The move is seen as inefficient use of corporate capital, with some questioning whether it sends the wrong message to investors.

The STRC preferred security is a floating-rate instrument, meaning there is no contractual reason for it to trade back to its original price of $100. Analysts argue that spending $25 million simply to lift the market price by 2.3% does not improve the business itself, but rather creates a short-term bounce in the chart.

The move differs from previous fundraising rounds, which were generally easy to understand. Capital was used to buy more Bitcoin, improve dividend coverage, and reduce outstanding debt. In contrast, part of the proceeds from this latest transaction appear to have been redirected into STRC, leading some to question whether Strategy is now trying to actively defend the preferred share price.

The $100 problem revolves around investor psychology, with many buyers entering STRC near $100 only to see it fall sharply. Since the instrument is not redeemable at its issue price, there is little fundamental justification for the market to value it there again.
