Strategy's $369M BTC Purchase Sparks Market Controversy

Strategy's recent announcement of purchasing 4,603 BTC for $369.7 million has sparked controversy among traders and crypto enthusiasts.

The company's continuous buying program has led to criticism that they tend to buy aggressively when Bitcoin's price is high, rather than waiting for major market pullbacks. In the recent purchase, Strategy acquired the Bitcoins at an average price of $80,318, which is roughly 29% higher than the rate at which they sold BTC over the summer to raise preferred stock cash.

Traders argue that this is poor execution, pointing out that buying high and selling lower is inefficient. However, Strategy's primary goal is long-term, multi-decade balance sheet accumulation, rather than dollar-cost averaging on a daily chart. They execute via At-The-Market (ATM) share issuance programs, selling Class A common stock (MSTR) into equity market demand and immediately converting those proceeds into spot Bitcoin.

The criticism also extends to the dilution of existing shareholders, as Strategy has raised $602.8 million in net proceeds by issuing over 4.5 million new MSTR shares in a single week to fund their latest Bitcoin buy, preferred stock buybacks, and dollar liquidity. While this may dilute share value, holders accept share dilution as long as the net Bitcoin Per Share yield increases faster than the rate of equity issuance.

The centralization and systematic risk concerns are also valid, with Strategy holding over 845,000 BTC, approximately 4% of the entire 21-million max supply. This concentration of supply under a single corporate entity runs counter to Bitcoin's decentralized ethos.
