Strategy's $8 Billion Loss Doesn't Faze Investors as Stock Rises
Strategy, a company that holds the largest corporate Bitcoin position, reported an $8.22 billion net loss for Q2 2026.
The diluted loss per share was $24.45, exceeding analyst estimates of $2.19 by a factor of ten.
Despite this significant loss, Strategy's stock price rose 4.41% to close at $97.74 on the day of the earnings release.
The discrepancy between the reported loss and the stock price reaction lies in the fact that most of the operating loss was an accounting entry due to Bitcoin's decline in value during Q2.
Under FASB's fair-value accounting rules, Strategy must mark its Bitcoin holdings to market at the end of every quarter. The $8.32 billion unrealized loss is a paper figure that reverses automatically if Bitcoin rises in Q3.
The company's CEO, Michael Saylor, stated: 'In the midst of this phase of muted Bitcoin sentiment and market skepticism, we continue to evolve our business model and establish Digital Credit as a new asset class.'
