Strategy's Branded Sneakers Sell Out Without Accepting Bitcoin
Strategy, a bitcoin treasury firm, recently launched a new line of branded Nike Air Jordans and Dunks. The limited-edition sneakers, priced at $250 each, quickly sold out. However, critics are pointing out that the company only accepts Apple Pay and credit cards as payment methods, not Bitcoin or any other cryptocurrency.
This decision has sparked ridicule on social media, with some users questioning why a bitcoin treasury firm wouldn't accept BTC for store payments. One user noted, 'Sometimes the memes write themselves.' Strategy's checkout process does not offer Bitcoin as an option, only credit cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay.
The company's decision to sell these sneakers with fiat payment options has been compared to Steak 'n Shake, a steakburger chain that started accepting BTC for food and beverages last year. Whenever customers pay with bitcoin, the firm's balance sheet is bolstered. Strategy, however, has paused buying BTC for the time being.
Saylor recently announced that the company repurchased its preferred stock STRC by acquiring $176 million. This move comes as Strategy has been playing around with fiat a whole lot more in 2026 than ever before. The idea of selling goods and merch for BTC might not be so out of the ordinary this year.
